It's obvious it had a difficult source material to adapt. Perhaps a first-person narration would have helped. So focused on Hanna's (Winslet) conflicting character that Michael's (Fiennes) later years is poorly handled. Emotionally detached which seems deliberate. The affair between Hanna and young Michael is intriguing but its length is unnecessarily long. By choosing English over German gains more audience at the cost of losing credibility.

Yeah, I agree that first person narration could have solved some of the problems, especially in showing what the hell was going through Michael’s head during his older years.. the dialogues were pretty weak too I thought.. The theme was definitely interesting and so was the first part of the movie.. some parts of the younger years (for example, snapshots of so many different reading scenes) could have been reduced.. the second half could have been done much better, closing some loose ends .. Hanna’s older years were portrayed much better than Michaels.

I find the book much more appealing. There were too many flaws with the movie not to mention the fact that actors/actresses were badly chosen for their parts ( I'm not implying they are not talented, rather not suitable for their parts)
